Hussein's desire to own Weapons of Mass Destruction [WMD]
has been well known for a long time. In the 1980s Saddam
wanted Iraq to become the predominant power in the Middle
East, and he saw WMDs and ballistic missile programmes as
necessary in achieving that goal.
