Kıbrıs Adası dörtyüz yıldan daha uzun bir süredir birbirinden
farklı iki topluma ev sahipliği yapmaktadır; Türkler ve Rumlar.
Birbirinden farklı ulusal, dinsel, dilsel ve kültürel kimliklere
sahip olan bu iki ulus birbirlerini tek bir ulus olmaya veya
birleşik bir topluluk oluşturmaya zorlamadan yüzyıllar boyunca
bir arada yaşamışlardır. ışte bu sayededir ki geÁmişte ana
kentlerde birbirinden ayrı Türk ve Rum mahalleleri oluşturulabilmiş
ve her iki toplumun bir arada yaşadığı köyler kurulmuştur.
Ancak bunlar adada ortaya Áıkan ilk karmaşada ortadan kaldırılmışlardır.
GeÁmişte adada her iki toplumun ihtiyaÁlarına cevap veren
iki farklı sistem vardı. Kıbrıs, adadaki toplumlardan birisi
olan Rumların anavatanları tarafından desteklenmesi sayesinde
Türkleri tek yanlı politik saplantıları iÁin bir engel olarak
görmesi ve bunun sonucunda Türkleri etkisiz hale getirmek
amacıyla fiziksel ve politik yönlerden kasıtlı tedbirleri
uygulamaya koyması nedeniyle bir sorun haline gelmiştir. |

The
Cyprus Issue
For
over 400 years Cyprus has been the homeland of two distinct
societies, the Turks and Greeks. They coexisted for centuries,
each with their own distinct national, religious, linguistic
and cultural identities, without forcing each other to make
up a nation or a unified society. Turkish and Greek quarters
grew in the main towns, as well as in mixed villages. However,
these were the first to disappear when the troubles began.
In the past there were two systems corresponding to the
two peoples on the island. Cyprus emerged as a problem when
the Greek society on the island, backed by its motherland,
started seeing the Turks as an obstacle in its unilateral
political obsessions and took deliberate steps to neutralize
the Turks in both physical and political terms.
